On October 2009 in Datteln Germany, Daniel Libeskind unveiled his new prefab housing design. The design is based on a shape of crystal with sharp edges. The prefab design definitely follows along the lines of Libeskind's former designs such as the Jewish Museum. The design has some good green aspects about it such as the solar thermal system that is integrated into the facade and a rain harvesting system.
I understand the push for prefabrication and green architecture to help solve the problem for affordable housing and an energy efficient society. But Libeskind's design seems defy the true meaning of prefabricated housing. Prefab is suppose to make construction of a building easier, quicker, and cheaper. The new Libeskind design is a one of kind piece that will be repeated. It is like having numerous iconic buildings in one neighborhood. Also the cost for the prefab house will range from 2.8 to 4.2 million dollars, hardly a cost efficient design.
The design is a daring and luxuries prefab design that will include 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, kitchen, a grand room, and a basement sauna. Daniel's wife Nina stated, "Daniel wanted to show that you could do something with the notion of a prefab that was still architecturally ambitious and distinctive while using the latest technology."
So what do you think is the design daring and pushing the envelope of what prefab can be or is it perverse idea of prefab design.
